VMware Licensing Calculator

How to use this VMware licensing calculator

To estimate the required number of subscription for a VCF, VVF, vSphere Enterprise Plus, or vSphere Standard environment provide the following details:

  • Product - select VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware vSphere Foundation, VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus, or VMware vSphere Standard.
  • Host configuration - since the licensing models for VCF, VVF, vSphere Enterprise Plus, and vSphere Standard are core-based, this calculator requires information about the number of servers/hosts, the number of CPUs per server, and the number of cores per CPU.

Subscription pricing - provide pricing for the product you wish to include in the calculations.

This tool does not take into account:

  • Add-On licensing and costs.
  • Any "trade-in" scenarios.

Information provided is for educational and informational purposes only and may not apply to your particular circumstances. When using VMware software as a customer, you are fully responsible for complying with VMware licensing terms. If you have any licensing questions, please consult the official VMware/Broadcom documentation, VMware representative, or your VMware reseller.

Licensing VCF, VVF, vSphere Ent+, and vSphere Std by physical core

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF), VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus, and VMware vSphere Standard environments are licensed by physical core under the following terms:

  • Required number of subscription licenses is based on the total number of physical cores of each processor (CPU) on all the ESXi hosts in the environment.
  • Customers must purchase at least 16 core licenses for each CPU.
  • All physical cores on all CPUs must be licensed, subject to a minimum of 16 core licenses per physical CPU.

Additional requirements:

  • Customers are entitled to VMware vCenter Standard exclusively for management of the environment covered by the VCF, VVF, vSphere Standard subscriptions, or any vSphere perpetual licenses with active support coverage.
  • Customers may not use or deploy VVF, vSphere Enterprise Plus, or vSphere Standard on public cloud services.
  • Customers may use or deploy VCF only on public cloud services certified for VCF.

vSAN capacity entitlement

VMware Cloud Foundation:
Customers are entitled to 1 Tebibyte (TiB) of vSAN capacity for each VCF core license (1 TiB/core).

vSAN TiBs included in VCF can be aggregated and utilized across VCF core licenses only.

Customers can always purchase an additional quantity of vSAN capacity for the incremental storage they may require for their environment.

VMware vSphere Foundation:
Customers are entitled to 0.25 Tebibyte (TiB) of vSAN capacity for each VVF core deployed in a vSAN cluster (0.25 TiB/core).

vSAN TiBs included in VVF can be aggregated and utilized across VVF core licenses only.

Customers can purchase an additional quantity of vSAN capacity for the incremental storage they may require for their VVF environment.
